Modern design elements are anything but new in the design world and have been actively practiced for decades. Not only is modern design seen in interior design but it can also be found in the architectural work of many famous architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Leoh Ming Pei.

Modern design is all about simplicity and minimalism.  Below you will find a guide to the essential elements needed when planning your modern living room design.

Shapes

Modern Living room

Modern design encompasses simplicity into all aspects of the room. A large part of modern design is the use of geometric shapes. Rectangles, squares and sharp angled triangles are commonly incorporated into a modern living room through artwork, furniture and other decor.Circles and ovals are also common shapes found in modern interior design.  It is important to note that décor, art and furniture contain little to no detail or decorative trimmings as it would interrupt the straight and simple lines of modern design.

Materials

There are many materials used in modern interior design including glass, leather, plastic and metal.

Glass and plastic are popular materials because their surfaces are flat and smooth, perfect for setting the modern look and feel of a room.

Polished metals like stainless steel or chrome are a huge part of modern interior design and can be incorporated in a variety of different ways such as furniture legs, lamps, side tables and even artwork.

Leathers and plastic are often a popular choice for couches and chairs as their surfaces are often times glossy and easier to create straight, boxy lines.

Color

Modern design utilizes a neutral color palette that incorporates white, beige and black. Keeping your main color palette to these 3 colors and adding bright accent colors and bold patterns throughout, will help make your furniture and other accessories the main focal point of the room. Consider adding a bright red or orange square rug that covers a small area. This will help add more straight lines to your room.

Getting the feel for modern design can be both fun and challenging. Does your home or office have any modern design elements in it? If so, we would love to see what you came up with! Share your modern design photos on our Facebook page!
